I have multiple pieces of equipment that failed after a severee thunderstorm. I can’t find any burns or blown fuses, no blow capacitors.. Everything looks great but they are dead. Any pointers?
I repair measurement and calibration gear and because that is a small market also maritime and industrial electronics. In measurement gear I want to add small signal relais.Bad caps are a lot less a problem as with crappy consumer grade stuff. Water damage/corrosion/bad solder joints. Conductive conformal coating (due to dirt). In PSU’s the smps controller, diodes and sometimes MOSFETs/IGBT’s. In serie-cap PSU’s the serie cap (on our forum we call that the Senseo syndrome). I seldom find dead fuses but most stuff I repair are the hopeless cases my customers can/will not repair themselves so things like fuses are often already replaced. In old Philips measurement gear all push buttons.For the rest I have no “usual suspects”. In 15 years I replaced one potentiometer (a ten turn precision version costing 80 euro’s)

I love watching tutorials like this but dabbling with circuit boards is well above my pay grade apart from swapping out the complete boards.
